Adam Long Artist Statement

Mankind tends to view himself as separated from and above his environment. My work is ultimately about humanity and explores mans connection to nature, his place in it and how man seeks to explore and understand his environment. The sculptures examine what it means to be human and bring nature back to man by using natural and man-made found objects. We are not apart from nature, but a part of it.

The ideas for these sculptures originated while I was in college. I have always known that I was a figurative sculptor and I pursued that in college. The human figure is a wonderful vehicle for conveying ideas and emotion. Beyond that I simply enjoyed the creative potentials inherent in the human body.
At the same time I also began to appreciate the natural forms and textures found in nature and I looked for ways to experiment with them in my art. I was becoming an environmentalist and being an environmental artist was soon to follow.
While working on a figure sculpture, that I didn't have any resolution for, I decided to cover it with pine bark I found in my backyard. I was amazed by the visual effect. There was so much potential in that one experiment.
Since then I have explored many paths within this idea, but most often the sculptures remain as humans unified with natural forms. I have been asked many times if they are people changing into trees or trees changing into people. They are neither. They are people as we could be in our relationship with the world around us. Now after years of perfecting my materials and techniques I am happy to share with you my tributes to nature and man with a caution to preserve both.
